Karachi is a good city for solar and a slightly awkward one to install in. The sun is reliable, the panels are cheaper here than anywhere else in Pakistan because the containers land at this port, and K-Electric tariffs give you a strong reason to generate your own units.
The awkward parts are salt air, dust, apartment buildings with shared roofs, and narrow lanes in the older neighbourhoods that a delivery truck cannot enter.
This guide walks the whole process from reading your bill to commissioning the system, with the Karachi-specific parts called out where they matter.

Step 1: work out what size you need
Start with your K-Electric bill, not with a package someone is selling you.
Pull the last twelve months. Note the units consumed each month, not the rupee amount, because tariffs change and units do not. Average them. Then check the spread between your highest month and your lowest, because that gap tells you how seasonal your load is.
Most Karachi households are heavily summer-weighted, since air conditioning dominates from April through October.
As a working rule for this city, 1kW of installed panels produces roughly 4 to 5 units a day.

Size against your annual average, not your July peak. Sizing to the worst month gives you a system that sits half idle from November through March, and under current net billing rules that surplus earns very little.

Step 2: survey the roof properly
Walk your roof twice, once around 9am and once around 4pm. You are looking for shadows.
Water tanks are the usual culprit in Karachi, along with stairwell housings, parapet walls and the neighbour’s under-construction extra floor. A single shadow crossing one panel drags down the entire string it belongs to, so layout decisions made casually here cost you output for twenty years.
Measure usable area. A 10kW system needs roughly 900 to 1,150 square feet of clear roof once you account for row spacing and walkways. Cramming panels edge to edge looks efficient on paper and self-shades in December.
Roof types across the city behave differently. A standard RCC slab on a 240 or 500 square yard house is the straightforward case. An older or thinner slab may need the structure load spread more carefully, and a competent installer will sometimes steer you away from heavy dual-glass modules toward lighter panels. That is a legitimate engineering call, not an upsell.
Tin-sheet roofs, common in Korangi, Landhi and the SITE area, take clamp-mounted structures rather than elevated frames. Cheaper on steel, provided the sheeting itself is sound.
Apartments are the hard case. Shared rooftops need written society or building management approval, and the cable run from a shared roof down to your individual meter can be long and expensive. Get the permission in writing before you collect quotes, because approval is the step that most often fails, and it fails after people have already paid deposits.
Step 3: choose components with Karachi in mind
Panels. A-grade Tier-1 N-type modules with documentation. Non-documented stock will usually fail your net billing inspection, which makes the saving pointless if you intend to apply. Current brand-wise rates and the Saddar market picture are in our solar panel price in Karachi today guide.
Mounting structure. This is where Karachi genuinely differs from Lahore. If you are within a few kilometres of the sea, in Clifton, DHA, Keamari or Hawksbay, salt mist corrosion is real and ordinary painted mild steel will rust through faster than you would believe. Insist on hot-dip galvanised steel or aluminium. The premium is meaningful and it is the right place to spend it.
Ask also whether the modules carry salt mist corrosion certification. Most Tier-1 panels do. Ask rather than assume.
Inverter. Hybrid is the sensible default in 2026, because storing a unit and consuming it yourself is now worth several times more than exporting it. Mount it on a shaded interior wall with airflow around it, never in a sealed cupboard and never in direct sun. Karachi summer heat makes inverters derate, meaning quiet output losses on exactly the days you need production most.
Protections. DC and AC surge protection devices, correctly rated DC breakers and proper earthing. AC breakers cannot safely interrupt DC fault current, and cheap quotes sometimes fit them anyway. Karachi grid voltage is not gentle, and this is the cheapest insurance on the whole installation.

Step 4: choosing an installer
More solar companies operate in Karachi than anywhere else in Pakistan. Quality varies enormously.
Ask for a physical address you can visit. Ask how long they have been trading. Ask for two or three recent installations in your area that you can look at, and actually go and look.
Ask who files the K-Electric application, because individual consumers generally cannot submit directly. Confirm this before payment, not after.
Ask what the workmanship warranty covers and for how long. Equipment warranties come from manufacturers. Workmanship warranty is the installer’s own promise about the wiring, the structure and the sealing, and it is the one that matters when a connector fails in year three.
Get the quote itemised: panel brand, exact model code and grade; inverter brand and model; structure material; each protection device listed separately; labour; and paperwork. If those lines are present you can compare quotes properly. If they are not, you cannot, and a suspiciously cheap total is usually cheap somewhere specific.
Red flags worth walking away from: refusal to put the panel model code in writing, no physical premises, full payment demanded upfront, and a quote that omits surge protection and earthing entirely.
Step 5: what installation week looks like
For a straightforward residential system, on-site work is short.
Day one. Structure fabrication and erection. Measuring, cutting, welding or bolting, and anchoring to the slab. On a coastal site the galvanised sections should arrive pre-treated rather than being painted on the roof.
Day two. Panel mounting and DC wiring. Panels lifted, clamped, and strung together. MC4 connectors crimped and seated properly, cables routed in conduit rather than left loose across hot concrete.
Day three. Inverter mounting, AC connection, earthing and protections. This is the part that separates good installers from fast ones.
Day four. Testing and commissioning. String voltage checks, insulation resistance, earthing continuity, inverter configuration and a first generation reading.
So three to four working days on site, assuming material is in stock and nobody finds a surprise on the roof. Large or difficult installations run longer.
Karachi-specific complications that add time and cost: crane or hoist charges where lanes are too narrow for a truck, which is common in older Nazimabad, Lyari and parts of Saddar; long cable runs where the roof sits far from the meter board; and society access restrictions in DHA and Clifton that limit working hours.
Step 6: the K-Electric net billing application
Karachi falls under K-Electric rather than a WAPDA DISCO, but the same NEPRA framework applies.
Since 9 February 2026, the Prosumer Regulations 2026 replaced net metering with net billing for new applicants. Your exported surplus is bought at roughly Rs 8 to Rs 11 per unit while your imports are charged at your full slab tariff, commonly Rs 40 to Rs 60. Consumers holding valid agreements dated before that cutoff were grandfathered onto the old one-to-one terms until those contracts expire.
The process, in order:
Your installer prepares a single-line diagram and the system design. The application goes to K-Electric’s net metering cell with your CNIC, a recent bill in your own name, and equipment datasheets. K-Electric reviews and issues a demand notice. You pay it, along with the licensing fee charged per kilowatt of installed capacity. An inspector visits and issues a compliance certificate. A bidirectional meter is installed and the agreement is signed.
Budget several weeks, sometimes longer. Two practical notes. The bill must be in the name of the person applying, and mismatches here cause more delays than any technical issue. And your system can run on self-consumption from the day it is commissioned, so there is no reason to leave it switched off while the file moves.
Step 7: design for self-consumption, not export
Net billing changed the right way to use a system in this city.
Every unit you consume yourself during daylight saves you the full retail tariff. Every unit you export earns you a fraction of it. So the goal is no longer to generate the most units, it is to use the most of what you generate.
Karachi is well suited to this. Daytime cooling load is heavy here, and air conditioning runs when the sun is up. A house in Gulshan running two ACs through a July afternoon is consuming its own generation almost in real time, which is the best possible outcome under the current rules.
Shift what you can into daylight. Washing machine, water pump, iron, dishwasher. It costs nothing and improves your return more than most hardware upgrades.

Step 8: maintenance in a coastal, dusty city
Karachi rooftops collect a remarkable amount of dust, and dust is the single largest avoidable loss in Pakistani solar.
Wash every two to three weeks in dry months. Plain water and a soft brush, early morning before the glass heats up. Never spray cold water onto hot glass. Ten minutes of work protects five to fifteen percent of your output, which is more than any brand decision you will agonise over.
Check the inverter display or app monthly. You want the daily generation figure tracking the seasonal pattern. A sustained drop of ten or fifteen percent that does not recover after a wash usually means a string has dropped out, a connector has loosened, or a panel has developed a fault. Catching it in week one rather than month six is the difference between a small repair and a lost season.
Once a year, inspect structure bolts, earthing continuity and DC connectors. Coastal sites deserve a closer look at the structure for early corrosion, particularly at welds and cut edges where galvanising is thinnest.
