How Many Solar Panels to Run 1 Ton AC in Pakistan?

Three to four panels. For a 1 ton DC inverter AC running eight hours a day on 585W modules, that is the answer, and it works out to roughly a 2kW array.

But that number hides most of what actually matters, and buyers who stop reading here tend to end up with a system that disappoints them at 4pm in June. The honest version has three parts: how much energy your AC consumes, how much your panels produce, and whether those two things happen at the same time of day.

That last part is where most calculations fall apart.

Step one: what a 1 ton AC actually consumes

The single biggest variable is whether your unit is a DC inverter or an older non-inverter model.

A 1 ton DC inverter AC does not draw a fixed amount. It starts high to pull the room temperature down, then settles into a low-power cruise once the room is cool. Typical draw ranges from about 300W up to 1,300W, cruising somewhere around 450W to 700W. Averaged over a day of use, expect roughly 0.7 to 0.9 units per hour.

A 1 ton non-inverter AC runs its compressor at full power whenever it is on, cycling the whole thing off and on with the thermostat. Draw sits around 1,400W to 1,700W, and consumption runs closer to 1.3 to 1.5 units per hour.

That difference is enormous. A non-inverter unit nearly doubles the solar array you need for the same cooling.

Your actual figure sits inside those bands depending on thermostat setting, room size, insulation, how often the door opens, and outdoor temperature. A room in Jacobabad in June works the compressor far harder than the same room in Islamabad in April.

Step two: what one panel actually produces

A 585W panel does not produce 585W of energy per hour, and it does not produce 585W for the whole day. The rating is a peak measured under laboratory conditions.

The working calculation for Pakistan:

585W × 5 peak sun hours × 0.78 system derate = roughly 2.3 units per day

That derate covers heat losses, dust, cable losses, inverter conversion and imperfect tilt. It is not pessimism, it is what actually happens on a roof.

Now the part most guides skip

Everything above is energy arithmetic. It tells you whether your panels generate enough units across a day to match what the AC consumes across a day. It does not tell you whether the panels are producing at the moment the AC is drawing.

They often are not.

Solar output follows a curve. It is near zero at 7am, peaks between roughly 11am and 2pm, and falls away through the afternoon. By 5pm a 2kW array might be producing 600W. By 6:30pm, almost nothing.

Air conditioning demand follows a different curve entirely. Pakistani homes get hottest in the late afternoon, and the AC works hardest from about 2pm through the evening, precisely as generation is collapsing.

So a three-panel array that produces 6.9 units across the day can still fail to run your AC at 5pm, because at that instant it is only making 500W and your compressor wants 900W. The daily totals balance. The moments do not.

Three consequences follow.

A system sized only for the AC will disappoint. In practice nobody installs a dedicated AC array. The AC becomes part of a whole-house system where the grid or a battery covers the shortfall when the sun drops.

Oversizing helps more than it looks like it should. Adding one extra panel does little to your daily total but meaningfully extends the hours during which the array can carry the compressor on its own.

Evening and night use requires storage. There is no arrangement of panels that runs an AC at 10pm. That requires a battery, which is a separate purchase and a separate calculation.

Realistic system sizes

The 3kW to 5kW band is the realistic answer for most Pakistani homes with one AC. The bare 2kW figure works only if you are content to have the grid quietly cover your late afternoons.

The inverter matters as much as the panels

Panel count is only half the sizing job. Your inverter has to handle the AC’s startup surge, not just its running load.

A non-inverter AC compressor can pull two to three times its running wattage for a moment at startup. That means a 1,500W unit briefly demanding 3,000W or more. An inverter sized to the running load will trip.

DC inverter ACs are gentler, ramping up rather than slamming on, which is one more reason they suit solar better than older units.

Running the AC at night

This is the question behind the question for most people asking about AC on solar. The answer is that panels cannot do it. Storage can.

A 1 ton inverter AC running six hours after sunset needs roughly 4.2 to 5.4 units. Accounting for usable depth of discharge and conversion losses, that points to a bank of around 6kWh for the AC alone, more if you also want lights, fans and a fridge running through the night.

A note worth hearing: many households find that running the AC until midnight and switching to fans afterwards halves the storage they need to buy. Sizing a battery to run air conditioning until dawn is one of the most expensive decisions available in residential solar.

Net billing changed the maths in your favour

Since 9 February 2026, NEPRA’s Prosumer Regulations 2026 replaced net metering with net billing for new applicants. Exported surplus earns roughly Rs 8 to Rs 11 per unit while imports cost your full slab tariff, commonly Rs 40 to Rs 60. Agreements signed before that date were grandfathered.

Air conditioning is now the best possible load to have on solar. It runs during daylight, which means you are consuming your own generation rather than exporting it cheaply. A household running an AC from 11am to 5pm is capturing full retail value on nearly every unit those panels make.

Contrast that with a home whose heavy loads all run after dark. Same panels, far worse economics.

If you have flexibility, shift what you can into daylight hours. Washing machine, water pump, iron, dishwasher. The system pays back faster with no additional hardware.

Practical things that change your answer

Room size and insulation. A 1 ton unit in a 200 square foot room with western sun exposure runs at full tilt all afternoon. The same unit in a shaded 120 square foot room cruises. Consumption can differ by forty percent for the same nameplate AC.

Thermostat setting. Every degree lower costs meaningful energy. Setting 26°C instead of 22°C is often the difference between three panels and five.

Location. Sindh and southern Punjab get better irradiance than the north, so a panel produces more there. But those regions also run their ACs harder and longer. The two effects partly cancel.

Panel cleanliness. Dust is the largest avoidable loss in Pakistan. An array that has not been washed in two months can lose ten to fifteen percent, which is an entire panel’s worth of output on a small system.

Shading. One shadow across one panel drags down the whole string. On a three or four panel array, that is a large fraction of your generation. Walk the roof at 9am and 4pm before finalising the layout.
