Who a 10kW system is actually for

Ten kilowatts is a big residential system. It suits a household consuming roughly 900 to 1,400 units a month, which in practice means a 240 to 500 square yard home running two or three air conditioners through summer, plus the usual refrigerator, deep freezer, pumps and lighting.

Why the panel line says 10.4kW and not 10kW

Deliberate oversizing. You almost always install slightly more panel capacity than the inverter rating, typically 10 to 25 percent more.

Panels are rated at standard test conditions: 1000 W/m², 25°C cell temperature. Your roof in Multan in June is not 25°C. Real-world output runs below nameplate most of the time because of heat, dust, wiring losses and imperfect tilt. Loading the inverter a little heavy means it runs closer to its efficient band for more hours of the day.

So a “10kW system” in Pakistan usually carries 10.4kW to 12kW of panels. If a quote gives you exactly 10.0kW of panels on a 10kW inverter, that is not wrong, but it is leaving output on the table in the mornings and evenings.

Location matters. Southern Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan out-produce Lahore and the north by ten percent or more. Fog season in the Lahore–Faisalabad–Gujranwala belt is a genuine hit to December and January numbers. Coastal Karachi does well but loses a little to humidity and dust.

On-grid, hybrid or off-grid

Off-grid cuts the grid entirely. Only sensible where there is no connection at all, like remote farms or tube wells. It needs a much larger battery bank and careful load discipline.

The payback maths, honestly

Take a household paying Rs 55,000 a month on roughly 1,000 units.

A 10kW system generating around 1,250 units a month covers that consumption with room to spare, assuming a reasonable share of it happens in daylight. If you self-consume 70 percent of what you generate and export the rest at the low buyback rate, your monthly saving lands somewhere around Rs 42,000 to Rs 50,000.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. First, that calculation assumes tariffs stay where they are, and they have gone one direction for years. If tariffs rise, payback shortens. Second, if most of your consumption happens after dark and you have no battery, self-consumption drops, exports rise, and the payback stretches out considerably. Load timing is now as important as system size.

What grade and technology are the panels? A-grade documented N-type versus B-grade or relabelled P-type is the biggest hidden variable in the whole quote.

What is the structure made of? Painted mild steel is cheap and will not last twenty-five years, particularly near the coast. Hot-dip galvanised or aluminium costs more for a reason.

Are protections included? DC and AC surge protection, properly rated DC breakers, and real earthing are not optional extras. AC breakers cannot safely interrupt DC fault current, and cheap quotes sometimes fit them anyway.

Is net billing paperwork included, and who files it? Most DISCOs require a registered installer to submit. There is also a per-kilowatt licensing fee, which on a 10kW system is a line item worth confirming.

Your installer designs the system and prepares a single-line diagram. The application goes to your DISCO or to K-Electric with your CNIC, a recent bill and equipment datasheets. Budget several weeks. Your system can run on self-consumption from the day it is commissioned, so there is no reason to leave it switched off while the file moves.

Living with a 10kW system

Maintenance is light but not zero. Wash the panels every two to four weeks in dry season with plain water and a soft brush, early morning before the glass heats up. Dust is the single largest avoidable loss in Pakistan and can cost you ten percent or more of your generation if you ignore it for a couple of months.

Check the inverter display or app monthly. You are looking for a daily generation figure that tracks the seasonal table above. A sudden drop of ten or fifteen percent that does not correct after a wash usually means a string has dropped out, a connector has loosened, or a panel has developed a fault. Catching it in week one instead of month six is the difference between a small repair and a season of lost output.

Once a year, have someone check the structure bolts, the earthing continuity and the DC connectors. Wind loading works fasteners loose over time, and MC4 connectors that were crimped badly on day one tend to announce themselves during the first heavy rain.

Shading deserves a mention because it is the mistake that ruins otherwise good installations. A single water tank, parapet wall or neighbour’s under-construction floor casting a shadow across one panel can drag down an entire string. Walk the roof at 9am and again at 4pm before finalising the layout, not after the structure is welded.
