A-grade Tier-1 panels are trading at roughly Rs 40 to Rs 48 per watt in Pakistan right now. B-grade stock runs anywhere from Rs 20 to Rs 32 per watt depending on what kind of B-grade it actually is.
That gap, somewhere between Rs 8 and Rs 20 per watt, is the single largest decision most buyers face. On a 10kW system it works out to a difference of Rs 80,000 to Rs 200,000. Real money, and the reason B-grade panels sell in volume here.
The question is not whether B-grade is cheaper. Obviously it is. The question is what you give up, and whether the saving survives twenty-five years of ownership.

What the grades actually mean
Every module that comes off a production line gets tested and sorted. Manufacturers run a flash test, measure actual power output, check electroluminescence images for cell cracks, and inspect the module visually.
A-grade modules pass everything. Output matches or exceeds the nameplate rating, no cell damage shows in the EL image, no cosmetic faults, and the module ships with a serial number, flash test report and full warranty documentation.
B-grade modules failed something. Sometimes that failure is trivial, a colour mismatch between cells or a small scratch on the frame. Sometimes it is not, like microcracks visible in the EL image or output several percent below the label.
The important part is that manufacturers do not publish a standard for what B-grade means. It is a rejection bucket, not a specification. So two B-grade panels from the same brand can be completely different products, and the seller usually cannot tell you which yours is.
The three things sold as “B-grade” in Pakistan
This is where buyers get confused, because the term covers three separate categories at three different price points.
Cosmetic rejects. Genuine factory seconds with visual defects only. Output close to rated, structurally sound. These are the good end of the B-grade market and typically the most expensive B-grade you will be offered.
Refurbished or repacked stock. Panels that were repaired, rewired, reboxed, or pulled from a cancelled order and cleaned up. They look new. Some are fine. Some have had a junction box replaced by hand.
Old stock and spot lots. Panels that sat in a warehouse for two or three years, or arrived as unsold container overflow. Age itself is not fatal if storage was dry. If they sat exposed to monsoon humidity, the backsheet and seals have already started their decline before you install them.
None of these come with meaningful documentation, which is the thread connecting all three.

Note the middle row. Entry-level A-grade from a smaller but genuine brand often costs less than premium-brand B-grade, and it comes with documentation and a warranty. A lot of buyers never consider this option because the conversation gets framed as Longi A-grade versus Longi B-grade, when the better third choice is a documented panel from a Tier-2 manufacturer.

What you actually give up
Output. A B-grade panel labelled 550W might produce 520W or 500W under the same conditions. On a single panel that is invisible. Across an array it means paying for a system size you do not have.
Mismatch losses. This one is underappreciated. Panels wired in a string all operate at the current of the weakest module. B-grade panels have inconsistent output between units, so the whole string drops toward the worst performer. Twenty A-grade panels behave as a set. Twenty B-grade panels behave as twenty individuals, and the string pays for it.
Warranty. The manufacturer’s 25 or 30-year performance warranty does not transfer to modules the manufacturer rejected. Whatever the dealer promises verbally is worth exactly as much as that dealer’s continued existence.
Net billing approval. This is the practical dealbreaker. DISCO and K-Electric inspections require documented equipment with traceable serials and datasheets. Non-documented panels routinely fail. If you intend to apply for net billing, B-grade is usually not an option at all, regardless of your risk tolerance.
Degradation rate. Microcracks that are invisible on day one grow with thermal cycling. Pakistani roofs go from ambient night temperature to 60°C-plus surface temperature every summer day. That cycling is precisely what turns a hairline crack into a dead cell section. Panels that tested acceptable at the factory can lose output far faster than the 0.4 to 0.55 percent a year that modern A-grade modules degrade at.
Resale and property value. A documented system with serials and warranty paperwork adds to a property. An undocumented array does not.
The twenty-five year arithmetic
Take a 10kW system. Roughly seventeen 585W panels.
At Rs 42 per watt A-grade, the panel cost is about Rs 418,000. At Rs 28 per watt B-grade, about Rs 279,000. You save Rs 139,000 upfront.
Now the other side. Assume the B-grade array delivers ten percent less than nameplate on average once you account for output shortfall and string mismatch, which is conservative. A 10kW A-grade system producing 1,250 units a month becomes 1,125 units. That is 125 units a month you are still buying from the grid.
At a blended tariff of Rs 45 per unit, that is roughly Rs 5,600 a month, or Rs 67,000 a year. Your Rs 139,000 saving is consumed inside twenty-six months.
Everything after that is loss, and this calculation assumes nothing actually fails. Add faster degradation, one panel dying in year six with no warranty to claim against, and a rejected net billing application, and the case collapses entirely.

Where B-grade genuinely makes sense
It is not always the wrong answer. There are real applications where B-grade is the sensible purchase.
Agricultural tube wells, where the load is seasonal, the site is remote, and nobody is applying for net billing. Boundary wall lighting and security lights. Livestock sheds, poultry farms and barn ventilation. Temporary site power for construction. Small off-grid installations at a hut or farm outpost where the alternative is no power at all.
What these share: no net billing application, tolerance for output variation, low consequence if a panel fails, and often a site where theft risk makes an expensive panel a bad idea anyway.
What they are not: the roof of a house you intend to live in for twenty years.
The bigger problem is not B-grade, it is mislabelling
Buyers who knowingly choose B-grade and understand the tradeoff are making an informed decision. The people who get hurt are the ones who paid an A-grade rate for something else.
Three versions of this are common in Pakistani markets.
B-grade sold as A-grade. Priced two or three rupees below the market A-grade rate, so it feels like a good deal rather than a warning. Without documentation, most buyers cannot tell the difference on delivery.
P-type sold as N-type. The panel is genuine, bifacial, and correctly labelled by the manufacturer as an older P-type PERC module. The dealer describes it as N-type. You pay a premium rate for older, less efficient, faster-degrading technology.
Relabelled panels. A generic module wearing a Longi or Jinko sticker. This is outright fraud and it exists, particularly around the most popular brands, because that is where the margin is.
Anything priced dramatically below the market range is telling you something. A dealer offering premium-brand A-grade at Rs 29 per watt is not doing you a favour.
How to verify before you pay
Get the exact model code in writing. Not “Longi 585W” but the full series and model number. A seller who will not put it on the quotation has told you what you need to know.
Check the nameplate on the back. Model code, wattage, Voc, Isc, and a machine-printed serial number. Handwritten or stickered-over information is a red flag. So is a nameplate that looks newer than the panel.
Ask for the flash test report. A-grade modules ship with measured output data. B-grade generally does not.
Cross-check the serial. Major manufacturers can verify serials. If the importer cannot produce traceable serials, you are not buying documented stock whatever the invoice says.
Compare the per-watt rate. Divide the panel line by total wattage and check it against current market ranges. Prices well below the band are the clearest single signal available to you.
Buy from someone who will still be there. A warranty is a relationship, not a document. A dealer with a physical address and a trading history matters more than three rupees per watt.
Inspecting the pallet on delivery
Do this before the panels go on the roof, not after.
Look along the glass surface at an angle in daylight. Snail trails, discolouration, or a cloudy patch under the glass all indicate problems. Check every frame for bends, dents and corner damage. Look at the backsheet for bubbling, scratches or delamination, and at the junction box for a proper factory seal rather than adhesive applied by hand.
Photograph every serial number as the pallet is unwrapped. Check them against the invoice on the spot. If the count or the codes do not match, that is the moment to raise it.
Confirm the cell colour is uniform across each panel and consistent across the batch. Visible mismatch between cells is one of the most common cosmetic-reject markers.

Net billing makes documentation non-negotiable
Since the NEPRA Prosumer Regulations 2026 took effect on 9 February 2026, net billing applications go through the same inspection process as the old net metering ones. Your installer submits equipment datasheets, a single-line diagram and the module specifications.
Undocumented panels do not survive that process. Neither do relabelled ones, once an inspector asks for a serial that can be verified.
The buyers most likely to be tempted by B-grade are also the buyers most likely to need the export credit, because they are cost-sensitive by definition. Saving Rs 139,000 on panels and then failing the application is the worst outcome available.
